The Visconti Homo Sapiens Lava series have become one of my all-time favourites for durable, reliable daily writers.
My Dark Age is fitted with a medium nib that was perfect right out of the box, smooth and juicy. It’s wider than Japanese medium nibs and even a bit wider than many Western medium nibs. The black nib on this version is super sexy.
I travel by air weekly and have found the double reservoir filler to be infallible. In over 100,000 miles traveled this year alone, not a drop of ink leaked. Combined with a Visconti Traveling Inkwell, one can get the maximum fill, which allows one to exploit the generous ink capacity.
I find its appearance to be aesthetically pleasing and very classy. I have a hard time deciding which Lava version is my favourite, but the scales usually tip towards this one. With the black nib and trim, it looks stealthy and very sexy.
In spite of its heft (45g), it is very comfortable to use for long writing sessions.
The Lava material has a lovely tactile feel to it. It's hygroscopic property (moisture-absorbing) makes it especially pleasant to use in hot/humid weather. The material is virtually indestructible, adding to the reasons this is my daily pen whether I am at my desk or in an airplane.
