Montblanc Meisterstuck: Master Strokes From A Signature Brand

For over 100 years, the Montblanc  snowcap symbol has been synonymous with craftsmanship, luxury, and prestige.

Since the company’s start in 1906, Montblanc consistently produces quality, hand assembled watches, leather goods, and writing instruments. However, there’s no question that the iconic Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pen line is its highest claim to fame.

Behind the Design

As a result of Montblanc’s revolutionary improvements to rudimentary fountain pens, its designs (manufactured in Hamburg, Germany) gained momentum internationally. Then, according to the Bloomberg article,See How Montblanc Makes Its Famous Pens A visit to the factory and museum in Hamburg, Germany,

Hamburg was devastated during [WWII], and immediately after the armistice, pen production moved briefly to Denmark. Montblanc, however, rebuilt its manufacturing capabilities and distribution networks quickly, and in 1952, the modern Meisterstück model no. 149 was launched.

A thick, black, imposing fountain pen with a piston filling system and gold trim, it's the most recognizable writing instrument anyone's ever made, and has been in production, with occasional modifications, ever since.

Because of the Meisterstück’s unique marriage between history and drama, fountain pen enthusiasts still covet this German model, to this day. Plus, these black and gold staples are available in 3 size variants as well as specialty material combinations.

Montblanc Meisterstück 144 Black Fountain Pen

Most popular with female audiences, the Montblanc Meisterstuck 144  is known as the “Classique.” Its slender design fits perfectly in small- medium sized hands, and its versatile converter and standard international cartridge compatibility make filling easy, regardless of ink preferences.

Like other Meisterstücks, this model is hand assembled in Hamburg, Germany and inspected after production, so if you order this pen and notice ink on its nib, don’t worry. Your pen has simply been dip tested to ensure everything works properly.

The fountain pen’s body is made from quality black resin, and the cap snaps on and off for secure closure. The 144’s gold plated trim adds a touch of jazzy sophistication that nods to Montblanc’s 1920s heritage. Truly, collectors could imagine this pen jotting down addresses in the hazy air of a hidden speakeasy just as easily as they could see it on the desk of a modern office.

Montblanc Meisterstück 146 LeGrand Fountain Pen

The Montblanc Meisterstuck 146 LeGrand fountain pen is available in both two-toned nib and monotone gold nib options. It’s the most popular model in the Meisterstück line as pretty much anyone can grip it comfortably.

If you’re wanting to be accepted within the fountain pen community, the 146 LeGrand is your ticket in. It’s widely regarded as both a prestigious and reliable fountain pen. Plus, its dramatically understated aesthetic and white star emblem are easily recognizable.

This Montblanc falls within a price range that implies its user is serious about his or her choice, but it’s not so outrageous that you can’t commit to the purchase. In essence, selecting the 146 LeGrand is a humble brag; everyone will know it’s respectable, but it’s not necessarily flashy.

If you are, however, looking for something with traditional Montblanc identifiers with a bold twist, consider the Meisterstück 149 fountain pen. It’s the largest pen in the Montblanc Meisterstück pen range, larger and weightier than the previously mentioned designs, and it best suits demographics with larger hands.

Plus, the notoriety of Montblanc’s name gives these signature fountain pens value. They not only retain their value over time, but the appreciation of many grows as they age into rare collectibles. All that to say, Montblanc Meisterstück fountain pens are lifelong investment pieces, not just fancy writing instruments for showing off, although they are good for that too.

Filling Montblanc Meisterstück Pens

As previously noted, Montblanc Meisterstück pens use a piston filling system, meaning you fill the ink cavity by turning its bottom edge counterclockwise over a cloth, until all the remaining ink has emptied out of its reservoir.

Filling Montblanc Meisterstück Pens

Fill it by dipping your nib into the desired ink bottle and turning the cone at the bottom end of your pen clockwise. Then, turn it in the reverse direction again, until a few drops of ink are expelled back into the ink bottle. This ensures your pen’s cavity is free of air bubbles and will write smoothly without hard starting.

Then, wipe any ink from your fountain pen’s nib and body with a lint-free cloth. You can review these steps by watching Montblanc’s official video “How to Take Care of Your Montblanc Fountain Pen.”  It also details cleaning instructions for wear and tear to precious resin.

Why Choose a Meisterstück Fountain Pen?

Okay, there are certainly some people who consider Montblanc fountain pens to be little more than status symbols, but we just can’t agree. These are quality pens that function well and look sharp doing it. Just take a look at these 5 star reviews from proud Meisterstück pen owners Judi, Deborah, and Cyndar:

Judi says,

I have several Montblanc pens to include the Starwalker Cosmos which I love. I have 3 others but carefully chose Montblancs that use cartridges to this point. The Meisterstück 149 is a big pen but so well balanced that it isn't an issue. The smoothness of writing with a Montblanc cannot be overlooked. I am a very happy camper. My first conventional Montblanc. Should mention I am very left-handed, no issue.

Deborah says,

This pen provided an excellent writing experience straight out of the box.

Cyndar says,

I love this pen. It is not heavy, which is perfect for me. It has improved my handwriting. It glides across the paper, and I might want another one. The seller is excellent too.

Above it mentions the Meisterstuck has a nib plated in 14K or 18K gold when in fact their nibs are solid 14K or 18K gold, not plated.

I have had a Meisterstuck 149 since 1973, when my wife bought it for the crushing sum of $44, which we could not afford. I have used it every day since. Its EF nib has a slight architecty feel (broader horizontally than vertically). That design improves my handwriting, espcially in Hebrew and Arabic. I now have dozens of fountain pens, some of them priceless and many with superlative performance. The MB 149 is still my favorite, even if only by a little.
