A Night to Remember: The Midnight in Florence

Midnight is a popular time for things to happen. You may be sleeping, but pop culture seems to think otherwise. From films such as Midnight in Paris to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil to songs such as “Midnight Rider” and “Midnight Train to Georgia,” it’s not surprising for this time of night to find its way into the fountain pen world. Add a popular Italian city, and you’ve got not just one of the best named, but also one of the most attractive looking pens in recent memory: the Midnight in Florence by Visconti.

Florence, the capital of the Tuscany region of Italy, is one of the most famous parts of the country. Known for its historic culture, huge art scene, and natural beauty, Florence attracts millions of visitors every year. As the birthplace of the Renaissance, the location of possibly the most famous statue in the world (Michelangelo’s David), and the home of one of the most popular poets ever (Dante), the city certainly has a lot to be proud of. And let’s not forget why we’re talking about it today: it’s the birthplace of one of our most favorite fountain pen brands, and the namesake of today’s point of discussion: the Visconti Midnight in Florence!

Visconti Homo Sapiens Midnight in Florence - Murasaki-Shikibu Ink

The Visconti Homo Sapiens Midnight in Florence

The aesthetics of the Midnight in Florence are like no other. The delicate balance of grays, blues, and purples truly feels like the midnight sky. This pen also has clear aspects, as it’s technically a demonstrator – but many of these pens are over 50% covered in the powerful swirling pattern!

Coming in the most popular Visconti shape - the Homo Sapiens - this pen is the successor of the London Fog, Chiantishire, and the Bronze Swirl. Side note: we still have some Bronze Swirls available! We have often said that there is a severe shortage of purple fountain pens in the world, but if purple is your color, this is surely the grail pen for you.

Visconti Homo Sapiens Midnight and Pearl

This resin and acryloid pen, trimmed in .925 sterling silver, comes with Visconti’s now-notable “Hook Safe Lock” system, plus their famous titanium double reservoir power filler (a unique filling system that allows a greater ink capacity and safe usage at all times). Limited to 888 pens worldwide, this one-of-a-kind pen (yes, each pen’s pattern is slightly different!), comes in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, Broad and 1.3 mm Stub nibs – plus, all nibs are crafted in a beautiful 23 karat Dreamtouch palladium!

midnight ink color

Some of our favorite inks to pair the Midnight in Florence with include the Iroshizuku Murasaki-Shikibu Purple, the Asa-Gao Morning Glory Dark Blue, and the Kiri-Same Misty Rain Gray. All of these shades blend beautifully with the colors of the pen itself!
