AP Limited Editions Urushi Lacquer Art Fountain Pen – Proplyd Fire

The AP Limited Editions Urushi Lacquer Art “Proplyd Fire” Fountain Pen is a controlled blaze captured in lacquer — a deep crimson composition ignited with suspended golden embers. Unlike figurative maki-e or shell inlay work, this piece relies entirely on layered urushi and metallic infusion to create depth, movement, and heat.

This is fire rendered through lacquer alone.

Ember-Rich Urushi Foundation

The pen is built upon a rich, translucent red urushi base — a tone that moves between burgundy and deep scarlet depending on light. Achieving this depth requires successive hand-applied layers of natural lacquer, carefully cured in humidity-controlled environments.

Within those layers, fine metallic particulates are suspended — not sprinkled on the surface, but embedded between coats. These micro-gold elements create a field of floating embers that shimmer subtly beneath the gloss.

The process involves:

  • Multiple hand applications of pigmented natural urushi lacquer

  • Controlled curing between each stage

  • Metallic-infused lacquer layering to create suspended particulate depth

  • Careful leveling and polishing to preserve dimensional clarity

The result is not glitter. It is depth — metallic warmth that feels internal rather than applied.

The Meaning Behind “Proplyd Fire”

The term Proplyd refers to cosmic formations — glowing, dynamic structures suspended in stellar nurseries. In this interpretation, the name evokes ignition within darkness: sparks emerging from a deeper red field, like fire taking shape in slow motion.

Under direct light, the embedded metallic flecks ignite with warmth. As the pen rotates, the red lacquer shifts in tone — revealing layers beneath the surface. In softer light, the piece becomes darker and more contemplative, with embers surfacing gradually.

The composition is uniform yet alive — no abrupt transitions, no structural breaks. Just suspended heat.

Refined Hardware, Balanced Contrast

The gold-toned nib and clip complement the warmth of the red lacquer perfectly. Rather than competing with the embedded metallic tones, the hardware reinforces the palette — creating cohesion across materials.

The finish is high-gloss, enhancing the sense of depth and allowing the embedded metallic particles to refract cleanly without interruption.

A Writing Instrument Beneath the Art

Proplyd Fire is fitted with a premium 14K gold nib, tuned for smooth, expressive writing performance. The filling system supports bottled ink use, ensuring that this work of lacquer artistry remains fully functional.

The warmth of the gold nib architecture mirrors the ember-like metallic depth within the lacquer.

Scarcity & Craft Positioning

Producing a lacquer surface with consistent metallic suspension — without surface texture or particulate clustering — demands exact control. Once cured, the composition is permanent.

This level of refinement naturally limits production.

For collectors who appreciate subtle complexity over overt decoration, Proplyd Fire offers intensity without chaos — a pen defined by internal glow and disciplined execution.

It is not surface flame.
It is fire, suspended in lacquer.
