Set against a deep, lustrous black urushi ground that recalls moonlit water, two golden koi circle one another in an eternal dance. In Japanese symbolism, paired carp represent harmony, fidelity, perseverance, and enduring love—making Carp In Love not simply decorative, but allegorical.

The artistry here is breathtaking. The koi appear almost suspended beneath the lacquer surface, their bodies executed in richly layered togidashi maki-e with raised passages of taka maki-e, shimmering with warm gold, ember reds, and remarkable depth. Threaded around them, luminous streams of iridescent raden curve like currents or celestial ribbons, shifting from sapphire to emerald as the light changes. They do not merely accent the composition—they animate it.
