AP Limited Editions Writer Maki-e Fountain Pen – Carp In Love

There are maki-e pens of great beauty, and then there are pieces that transcend craftsmanship and become poetry in lacquer. Carp In Love belongs decisively to the latter.

At once intimate and monumental, this extraordinary composition transforms a writing instrument into a living work of art—an evocation of movement, symbolism, and devotion rendered at museum level.

Set against a deep, lustrous black urushi ground that recalls moonlit water, two golden koi circle one another in an eternal dance. In Japanese symbolism, paired carp represent harmony, fidelity, perseverance, and enduring love—making Carp In Love not simply decorative, but allegorical.

Yet symbolism is only the beginning.

The artistry here is breathtaking. The koi appear almost suspended beneath the lacquer surface, their bodies executed in richly layered togidashi maki-e with raised passages of taka maki-e, shimmering with warm gold, ember reds, and remarkable depth. Every scale is individually articulated. Every fin carries graceful movement. Each fish seems to turn in living water.

Threaded around them, luminous streams of iridescent raden curve like currents or celestial ribbons, shifting from sapphire to emerald as the light changes. They do not merely accent the composition—they animate it.

This is maki-e operating at a level where painting, sculpture, and light all converge.

What is especially remarkable is the balance of restraint and richness. The black urushi ground creates vast negative space, allowing the composition to breathe. The koi are not crowded by ornament, but elevated by it. The result is profoundly elegant.

It feels less like a pen depicting fish, and more like a Japanese folding screen distilled into handheld form.

Viewed closely, the layering reveals astonishing subtlety—powdered gold gradations, delicate outlines, sculptural relief, raden constellations embedded like stardust at the finials. Every rotation reveals another hidden note.

This is the sort of object that rewards decades of looking.

The engraved 14k gold nib, offered in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, and Broad, provides a writing experience worthy of the artistry, while the converter filling system makes the piece functional despite its obvious status as collectible lacquer art. An 18k gold nib is available in Medium.

But in truth, Carp In Love feels far beyond collectible - it feels like an heirloom.

Why We Love It
