Pelikan Souverän M1000 Fountain Pen – Raden Stardust “Hoshikuzu”

Pre-Order Only - Arriving early May, 2026

Extremely limited stock - this will likely sell out very quickly!

The Pelikan Souverän M1000 Raden Stardust “Hoshikuzu” is an extraordinary meeting of two great traditions: Pelikan’s historic German penmaking and the rarefied world of Japanese urushi and raden artistry. More than a limited edition, it is a true cross-cultural work of art, where technical mastery and decorative tradition converge at the highest level.

Its name, Hoshikuzu, translates as stardust, and the pen fully earns that poetic title.

Created by the renowned maki-e artist Yamazaki Mushu and the Hoshu-kai collective in Yamanaka Onsen, the design begins with a deep black urushi lacquer foundation that evokes the vast stillness of a night sky. Across that dark surface, three varieties of finely crushed abalone shell are painstakingly applied using the traditional Funzutsu technique, forming vertical constellations of iridescent raden that shimmer in blue, green, violet, and silver as light moves across the pen.

The effect is extraordinary.

Not decorative in the conventional sense, but atmospheric.

The pen appears almost illuminated from within, as though stars have been suspended beneath lacquer.

What makes Hoshikuzu especially compelling is its restraint. Unlike pictorial maki-e works that rely on overt imagery, this piece expresses wonder through abstraction—through light, rhythm, and depth. The composition feels celestial without ever becoming literal, and that gives it a quiet sophistication that is deeply moving in person.

The raden is sealed beneath layers of clear lacquer and painstakingly polished to remarkable depth, allowing the surface to feel almost glass-like. Warm 24k gold-plated accents—from Pelikan’s iconic beak clip to the cap bands—provide a luminous counterpoint to the cosmic black lacquer. Each pen is individually signed by the artist and numbered, reinforcing the deeply personal nature of the craftsmanship. Produced in a limited edition of 400 pieces worldwide, it is among the most significant modern Pelikan special editions.

Beneath this artistry sits the formidable M1000 platform, Pelikan’s flagship oversized writing instrument. Fitted with a large, expressive 18k two-tone gold nib and Pelikan’s renowned piston filling system, it offers a writing experience equal to the artistry surrounding it—generous, smooth, and unmistakably alive on the page.

What makes Raden Stardust so exceptional is that it does not simply place Japanese decoration onto a German pen.

It fuses two traditions so completely they become inseparable.

For collectors of maki-e, Pelikan limited editions, or museum-level writing instruments, Hoshikuzu stands among the most compelling modern releases in the category—quietly cosmic, technically masterful, and heirloom in every sense.

Why We Love It

Hoshikuzu feels less like a limited edition pen than a celestial lacquer object built around one of the great writing platforms. The restrained raden work is mesmerizing, and the marriage of Pelikan engineering with Japanese artistry is about as compelling as modern penmaking gets.
