The AP Limited Editions Writer Maki-e “The Firefly Squid” Fountain Pen is a breathtaking celebration of Japan’s luminous oceans and its revered maki-e tradition. Limited to just 18 pieces worldwide, this pen exemplifies AP Limited Editions’ commitment to blending fine art with exceptional craftsmanship.

Crafted on a deep black urushi lacquer base, the pen features an exquisite depiction of the firefly squid — a symbol of mystery and beauty in Japanese culture. Using a combination of gold sheets, abalone shell inlay, and delicate layers of gold and silver powder, the artisan captures the squid’s radiant glow as it drifts through dark ocean currents. The concentric golden rings that form the creature’s eyes, along with its glimmering bioluminescent trail, bring this design to life.

The urushi lacquer is finished using the tsuya-age polishing technique, producing a mirror-like surface that enhances the contrast between dark lacquer and shimmering maki-e details. Every curve and contour of the barrel reflects the precision of master artisans trained in Japan’s finest lacquer schools.
