Still not sure…

I started out with the Inkmeister Premium box for $30. I liked it a lot. I had three shipments of that level and was so satisfied I decided to upgrade to the Penthusiast box. First one was great..a very pretty Monteverde Rodeo Drive in Iridescent Purple. The next box contained a Lamy All Star which I love. The next box is where the problems started. I received another iridescent purple Rodeo Drive. Contacted customer service and they sent me a return label to send it back and they would replace it. This process took almost a whole month and when I received the replacement, it was ANOTHER duplicate pen. I contacted them again and they offered again to replace it if I sent it back again and also told me it was an error and accidentally sent me another customers pen they had in for repair. They didn’t send me a label, and I haven’t sent the pen back. It’s still in the mailing envelope. The next box was a beautiful Ruby Kaweco Sport AL. My last two boxes seemed pretty light for the price. In one was a Lamy 069 and another was a Kaweco ART Sport but both boxes had just the pen and the ink samples and nothing else. The reason I give all this detail is because I’m new to pens and don’t know if I’ve gotten what I’ve paid for. Most boxes in the $75 box have had more than just a pen and ink—usually there’s a writing surface or a small pen case added. But the last two didn’t.

The customer service I have received has not really been what I expect from a small business. For one, if I sent a customer someone else’s property by mistake I would definitely pursue retrieving it and would make it right. They don’t seem concerned that they sent me the wrong item twice. I got extremely frustrated with the whole thing, mainly because I have the distinct impression that the return and replacement process is mostly left up to the customer. The wrong item has to be received by them before they will replace it. I think they could come up with an easier mechanism for these situations. I’ve seen reviews by other people that mention the PITA process.

I still have my subscription at the $75 price. I do like the pens I’ve received (except the duplicate one) but I want to make sure I’m getting the right value out of a subscription. I’m going to give it a couple more boxes to see if anything changes.

An ok start

Got my first box. Inks were alright. Pen was fine point which I don't use. I marked medium and above as my preference. Will give it 3 months to get a better idea.

What a nice box!

I enjoyed the selection of items. The quality was better than I expected. The only confusing thing is that I signed up for the monthly Penthusiast and I don’t understand if it’s one month or is actually sent monthly. I received an email saying I had the subscription, but my account says I don’t have any subscriptions. I have no idea if I’m getting another box this month or not. Perhaps a bit more clarity around that. Thank you!

It's ok

It's ok... we did get some nice pens, but we also got some that were just meh. Also, I requested to get pens that were medium nibs are larger, and had to contact customer support a couple of times because we got fine or Xfine nibs instead. The last box had pens labeled XF, but on contacting customer support we discovered they'd put medium nibs on them (confusing.) These last pens also had ink in the nibs and one doesn't write correctly. It's scratchy and looks like one side of the nib is off. I ended up canceling our subscription. As fun as a subscription box sounded, I'd rather spend that $75 on a pen I know I want.

Broaden Your Handwriting Horizons

As a calligrapher familiar to dip and fountain pens, I still have a lot to learn and I now live in a remote area. No pen stores or events are nearby. Truphae was recommended by a fellow Fountain Pen Enthusiast. I signed up for 3 months. My first box hit it out of the park with a real deal: gorgeous iridescent white Monteverde “Rodeo Drive” pen (that and shipping would have been above the cost) — and then there were 5 ink samples and a fine large Faber Castel journal all Beautifully packaged. Pen inked up perfectly and although I haven’t had much time to play with everything, I’m very pleased with the quality and variety. Truphae staff have been helpful and responsive: I changed my specifications and no problem. I would recommend that you do verify that they get your preferences, and that you
Understand that they can only do so much specificity within the limitations of the deals they are able to construct. That written, I would highly recommend this subscription for convenience, value and exposure. I did the Penthusiast level. (Skip the daily Starbucks, make your own coffee, invest in a subscription: you’ll not only have better coffee but you’ll have beautiful pens and more! 😉)
