Jacques Herbin Rouge Hematite 1670 ink brings a saturated crimson tone laced with fine gold shimmer to the page. Created to honor the brand's founding year, this celebratory formula delivers dramatic depth, warm undertones, and eye-catching sparkle that shifts in the light.

Color & Shimmer

This rich red shows strong shading and a radiant gold particle effect on quality paper. The hue leans toward a classic, slightly earthy crimson that evokes its hematite namesake, while the metallic particles settle into broader strokes and pooled areas for a luminous finish.

Writing Experience

Gently invert or shake the bottle before filling to distribute shimmer evenly. For best results, use broader or wetter nibs and allow a touch of extra dry time. As with any particle-infused ink, routine pen maintenance is recommended; clean pens regularly and avoid long-term storage inked. Rouge Hematite also shines in dip pens and with brushes for decorative headers, cards, and illustrations.

Love Herbin Inks!

I got this because I was looking for straightforward primary colors to play around with ink mixing, but it’s been a surprising pleasure to write with. Smooth, wet, and fun shading. If you’re like me and write mostly with Iroshizuku because that’s what everybody on r/fountainpens posts about, try some Herbin inks instead!

Also, and most importantly for me, if you write left-handed, these stay put and don’t smudge after they’re dry.

Everything I wanted in a blood red

How do I love this ink? Let me count the ways. A drop dead blood red in every nib size I own (the "little black dress" of red inks). While the shimmer doesn't show in writing, it has a striking gold shimmer in swatches and a browned edge line. I can't wait to try it in a fat calligraphy pen. The flow is perfect - although the dry time is a bit slow, but I think that is true of most Herbin inks.
