AP Limited Editions Writer Fountain Pen – Two Fish (Chinkin) – Limited Edition

The AP Limited Editions Writer Two Fish Fountain Pen is a refined and deeply traditional expression of Japanese lacquer artistry, executed entirely using the chinkin technique. Limited to just 18 pieces worldwide, this piece represents a focused and disciplined approach to decoration—where precision, restraint, and craftsmanship take precedence over ornamentation.

Unlike maki-e, which builds imagery through layered powders and lacquer, chinkin is a subtractive art form. Each line is carefully hand-carved into the hardened urushi surface using specialized tools, then filled with gold to create contrast and definition. This process demands extraordinary control, as every incision is permanent—there is no opportunity for correction. The result is a surface that feels both delicate and exacting, with each line carrying intention and purpose.

The Two Fish motif is rooted in traditional symbolism, often associated with balance, harmony, and fluidity. The composition flows naturally across the pen, with the fish rendered in graceful motion, their forms defined through fine, rhythmic engraving. The gold-filled lines catch the light subtly, creating a quiet brilliance that reveals itself through movement rather than immediate impact.

Without the layering of maki-e, the artistry here is entirely dependent on the precision of the carving. This gives the piece a distinctly refined character—clean, controlled, and deeply connected to traditional techniques. The surface remains smooth to the touch, while visually offering depth through line and composition alone.

The Writer silhouette provides a balanced and elegant foundation for this level of detail, offering both presence and comfort in hand. Beneath the artistry, the pen is fitted with a finely tuned 14k gold nib, available in Extra Fine, Fine, Medium, or Broad, delivering a writing experience that is smooth, consistent, and refined.

With only 18 pieces produced, this pen stands as a rare example of chinkin executed at a high level—where simplicity is not a limitation, but a demonstration of mastery.
