Chinkin is a centuries-old technique practiced within Namiki’s urushi atelier, distinct from maki-e yet harmoniously paired with it in the brand’s portfolio. Artisans first build the pen’s surface with multiple layers of urushi lacquer over Japanese ebonite, polishing between coats to achieve a rich roiro sheen. Using fine chisels, they incise precise lines and dot work into the cured lacquer, then charge the engraved recesses with gold to create subtle relief and enduring contrast.
