The Sailor Professional Gear Slim Princess Ochikubo Fountain Pen brings a Japanese literary character to a compact everyday writing instrument. Part of Sailor's Princess Raden collection, it pairs a dark blue barrel with a pale yellow cap and decorative details that reward a closer look. The combination of traditional surface decoration and a 14k gold nib gives the pen an appeal that extends beyond its distinctive color scheme.

Craftsmanship & Design

The PMMA resin cap and barrel carry raden and yubi maki-e decoration. Raden introduces mother-of-pearl elements that change with the light, while the painted motifs build a visual narrative across the pen. The pale cap and darker barrel provide contrasting backgrounds for the delicate details, with gold-toned trim connecting the two colors.

The Professional Gear Slim's flat-ended silhouette keeps the decoration within a clean, recognizable form. Its threaded cap opens to reveal a matching dark grip and gold nib. At approximately 124mm closed and 16.8g, the pen remains compact enough to carry easily without losing the visual interest of its decorated surfaces.

Writing Experience

This example is fitted with a 14k gold Medium-Fine nib. The grade offers a controlled line for journals, correspondence, and smaller handwriting, with the tactile feedback associated with Sailor's gold nibs. It is a useful choice for a writer seeking more line definition than a typical broad everyday nib.

The cartridge/converter filling system uses Sailor proprietary cartridges or a compatible Sailor converter for bottled ink. This practical arrangement makes the Princess Ochikubo suitable for regular use, allowing its decorative character to accompany ordinary writing rather than requiring it to remain a display piece.

Story & Collection

Sailor's design takes its name from Princess Ochikubo, whose story follows a mistreated young woman helped by a loyal attendant toward a happier life. The tale's themes of kindness and transformation give context to the pen's decoration. Within the Princess Raden collection, Ochikubo offers a distinctive combination of contrasting colors, reflective shell, and illustrated detail on a familiar Sailor platform.
