The Montegrappa Extra 1930 Black Bamboo Fountain Pen is one of the most recognizable expressions of Montegrappa’s flagship Extra silhouette. Its dark celluloid is threaded with green, charcoal, and warm brown striations that recall the irregular surface of bamboo, giving the pen a quietly organic character that changes noticeably with the light.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Extra 1930 was conceived as a modern interpretation of Montegrappa writing instruments from the 1930s, and Black Bamboo reflects that heritage through both material and construction. The cap and barrel are made from traditional celluloid rather than modern injection-molded resin, producing depth and variation that cannot be perfectly repeated from one pen to another. Sterling-silver trim—including the broad center band and signature roller clip—adds weight and contrast while maintaining the classical Italian proportions of the design.

Writing Experience

This example is fitted with an 18k gold Medium nib and an ebonite feed. The piston filling mechanism keeps the ink supply contained within the barrel and reinforces the Extra 1930’s traditional architecture. The pen’s larger diameter and substantial body give it a deliberate, confident feel in hand, while the ebonite feed and gold nib provide the kind of tactile writing experience collectors often associate with Montegrappa’s earlier celluloid production.

Collector Context

Black Bamboo has become one of the finish names most closely associated with the Extra 1930 family. The discontinued celluloid material, traditional sterling-silver appointments, and recognizable pattern make clean examples increasingly appealing to collectors of Italian pens. This pen is preserved in New Old Stock condition with its original boxes and papers, allowing the material and presentation to remain as close as possible to how it originally left Montegrappa.
