The Montegrappa Extra 1930 Red Celluloid Fountain Pen captures the material richness and substantial proportions that made the Extra one of Montegrappa’s defining modern classics. Its vivid red celluloid is paired with sterling-silver appointments and a traditional piston-filling architecture, creating a pen that feels rooted in the golden age of Italian writing instruments without becoming purely nostalgic.
The Extra 1930 was conceived as a modern interpretation of Montegrappa pens from the 1930s, and its construction reflects that heritage. The cap and barrel are formed from richly patterned celluloid, a material prized for its depth, warmth, and natural visual variation. Sterling-silver trim—including the broad center band and Montegrappa’s signature roller clip—adds weight and definition without overwhelming the celluloid.
Red celluloid is especially effective on the Extra because the large cap and barrel give the material room to show its layered pattern. The color shifts from saturated red to darker internal veining depending on the angle, making the pen feel far more dimensional than a uniformly colored resin body.
This example is fitted with an 18k gold Medium nib and an ebonite feed. The combination gives the pen the soft, traditional feel expected from a large Italian fountain pen, while the piston filling system provides a self-contained mechanism appropriate to the Extra’s classic construction.
