A year of changing seasons unfolds across the Pelikan M1000 Four Seasons Lucky Charm Maki-e Fountain Pen. Playing-card suits become symbols of nature and good fortune, bringing a familiar visual language into an intricate lacquer composition. Built on Pelikan’s flagship Souveran M1000, this limited edition joins a substantial writing instrument with artwork designed to reward patient, close observation.

Craftsmanship & Design

Master artisan Ishikura Mitsuhiro of the Kaga Hoshukai created the decoration using Kaga Togidashi-Takamaki-e. This demanding approach brings together raised lacquer work and polished surfaces, building the design through successive applications of lacquer and precious powders. The dark urushi foundation provides contrast for the luminous decoration, while 24k gold-plated trim frames the composition.

Red and black details connect the artwork to its playing-card inspiration. Traditional Sayagata and Asanoha patterns add a geometric counterpoint to the seasonal imagery. The combination gives the pen more to reveal as it turns in the hand: individual motifs form part of a larger composition, with texture, reflection and color contributing to its character.

Writing Experience

The handcrafted, two-tone 18k gold Medium nib gives this example the distinctive scale of the M1000 writing platform. Its generous proportions suit writers who appreciate a larger fountain pen, while the integrated piston mechanism fills directly from bottled fountain-pen ink. A screw-on cap completes the familiar Souveran format, retaining the practical features beneath the elaborate lacquer decoration.

Collector Context & Symbolism

Each suit represents a season and an auspicious wish. Spring’s clubs signify happiness; summer’s diamonds suggest prosperity; autumn’s hearts express love; and winter’s spades stand for courage and resilience. Blossoms, water, leaves and snow extend that cycle into the natural world.

Limited to 123 pieces worldwide, the edition is individually numbered and signed by the Maki-e artist. The Lucky Charm name reflects the hope carried by its imagery, making this a meaningful choice for a personal milestone or an important gift. For the collector, its appeal rests in the relationship between the seasonal story, the artisan’s hand and Pelikan’s established flagship design.
