The Sailor Professional Gear Wajima Bijou Coral Fountain Pen brings one of Japan’s most respected lacquer traditions to the familiar Professional Gear silhouette. Rather than treating the Pro Gear as a blank surface for color alone, the Wajima Bijou series uses layered lacquer, mother-of-pearl, and gold powder to create a finish with the depth and visual richness of jewelry.

Wajima Craftsmanship

Wajima lacquerware is built through an exacting process of repeated coating, curing, polishing, and refinement. On the Coral edition, the surface is hand finished in a warm red tone and accented with decorative techniques associated with traditional Japanese lacquer work. Mother-of-pearl at the cap top reinforces the “Bijou” theme, while the gold trim and engraved center band give the pen a formal, cohesive presentation.

The appeal is not simply the color itself, but the way the surface responds to light. The lacquer develops visual depth that a conventional resin body cannot replicate, and the mother-of-pearl details introduce small flashes of iridescence without overwhelming the understated Professional Gear form.

Writing Experience

Beneath the decorative work is Sailor’s Standard-size Professional Gear platform, fitted here with a large 21k gold Medium nib. Sailor’s 21k nibs are prized for their controlled feedback and precise line character, giving the pen a writing experience that remains unmistakably Sailor despite the artisan exterior. The cartridge/converter filling system keeps maintenance straightforward and allows the pen to move easily between bottled inks and proprietary cartridges.

Collector Context

The Wajima Bijou collection was produced in a total of 600 pens worldwide, divided evenly between Coral and Sapphire, leaving 300 examples in each color. The limited production, numbered presentation, and hand-applied lacquer work give the Coral edition considerably more collector significance than a standard Professional Gear finish.
