The Montblanc Patron of Art Gaeus Maecenas 888 Fountain Pen is the more exclusive solid-gold interpretation of Montblanc's 2011 Patron of Art tribute to the Roman statesman whose name became synonymous with cultural patronage. Created for the 20th anniversary of the Patron of Art collection, the Edition 888 translates the architecture and symbolism of ancient Rome into one of the series' most sculptural designs.

Craftsmanship & Design

The barrel is fashioned from precious marble and shaped to evoke the fluting of a classical Roman column. Around it, solid Au 750 gold fittings provide a warm architectural framework. The skeletonized cap is also executed in solid Au 750 gold, with the opening line of Horace's ode to Maecenas integrated into the design. A portrait of Maecenas appears at the cone in the form of an ancient Roman coin motif, while laurel-wreath details reinforce the connection to classical Rome.

Writing Experience

An Au 750 / 18k gold nib carries special engraving including the Roman numerals MMXI, marking the 2011 release. The pen uses Montblanc's piston-filling system, allowing bottled ink to be drawn directly into the barrel.

Collector Significance

Only 888 examples of this version were produced worldwide. The combination of a marble barrel, extensive solid-gold construction, skeletonized cap architecture, and complete New Old Stock presentation places it among the more substantial Patron of Art editions of its era. This example is accompanied by its original boxes and papers.
