The Sailor Professional Gear King of Pen Sakura Nagare is one of the most unusual historical expressions of Sailor's flagship oversized fountain pen. Created as part of a Japanese government consolation-gift program around 2010, this original flat-top Professional Gear King of Pen was never conceived as an ordinary retail release. Its significance rests at the intersection of Japanese decorative craft, Sailor's largest 21K nib format, and a specific chapter of modern Japanese history.
A Prime Minister's Gift
The original Sakura Nagare Professional Gear pens were commissioned as consolation gifts for Japanese veterans and former detainees connected with the postwar Soviet internment period. Two principal fountain pen sizes were produced: a standard Professional Gear and the substantially larger King of Pen. Collector research places production of the King of Pen version at approximately 1,161 examples, making it far less common than a normal catalog model and particularly unusual in complete, unused condition.
The presentation is part of the identity of the piece. The Prime Minister's paulownia crest and the dedicated gift presentation distinguish this early Sakura Nagare from later commercial interpretations of the same theme. This example is New Old Stock and includes its original box, preserving the context that gives the model much of its historical appeal.
Sakura Nagare
Sakura Nagare, or "Flowing Cherry Blossom," uses one of the most enduring motifs in Japanese art: cherry blossoms carried by flowing water. The dark body becomes a field for scattered shell and lacquer decoration, allowing the reflective material to catch light differently as the pen turns in the hand. Rather than reading as a repeating pattern, the decoration suggests blossoms moving across a current, giving the surface a sense of motion and depth.
Sailor has long used maki-e, urushi, and raden techniques on its highest artistic writing instruments. The Sakura Nagare design combines that decorative tradition with the broad, flat-ended proportions of the original Professional Gear King of Pen, giving the artwork a larger visual canvas than the standard-size version.
The King of Pen Format
At the center of the writing experience is Sailor's oversized 21K gold King of Pen nib. This example is fitted with a Medium nib. The KOP nib is prized not simply because of its size, but because its broad geometry and 21K alloy give it a distinctively generous, responsive feel that is different from Sailor's smaller nib formats.

This is a genuine historical presentation pen, an original flat-top Professional Gear KOP rather than the later 1911-shaped interpretation, a raden and maki-e work built around an iconic Japanese motif, and a complete New Old Stock example with its original box.
