I do not think this is a quality "control" issue, I think the extremely poor quality of this pen is caused by the outdated manufacturing processes used by many of the mainstream fountain pen manufacturers. For what it is, a third rate entry pen, the Pilot Custom 74 (Lavender Fog) is obscenely over-priced, and in fact a cynical marketing exercise to off-load stock at an inflated price. Remember one can get a far superior pen for far less price, a Lamy Studio with a 14K nib can be had for about $170.00 USD, and a Lamy 2000 with a gold nib for less than the extortionate $347.00 USD being asked for this "beginners" Pilot. As for bargain quality pens the Chinese manufacturer's are decimating the traditional European/Japanese manufacturers for good reason, consider the Mahjohn P149 very comparable to a Montblanc for $50.00 USD.
My Pilot Custom 74 (Lavender Fog) has a soft fine nib has issues with ink flow, feedback, and is not easy to clean. On up strokes it’s so dry that almost no ink lays down, while down strokes are quite wet. When I write with it, there is just significant drag on paper in every direction. It's a very unpleasant resistance, which feels very different from feedback. There is a sweet angle for left-right strokes, but at that angle right-left stokes are horrible. Vice versa for the other direction. Upstrokes are a complete nightmare. Many people share these experiences.
There are some products reputable retailers should not sell, this is one of them.
I’ve wanted a Pilot special edition nib for a while. I have several Decimos that are my EDCs. This one is an absolute beauty to see and to write with in a Soft Medium nib. Additionally, while the pen was pre-ordered, Truphae was always prompt and kind in their response to my impatient inquiries in my excitement to get my hands on the beauty.
