AP Limited Editions Writer Maki-e Fountain Pen – Red and Raden

The AP Limited Editions Writer Maki-e Fountain Pen – Red and Raden is a striking celebration of color, texture, and traditional Japanese lacquer artistry. Combining vivid red urushi lacquer with shimmering shell inlay, this edition showcases the dramatic interplay between bold color and luminous natural materials—an aesthetic that rewards both distance and close inspection.

The pen is built upon a foundation of brilliant red urushi, a lacquer derived from the sap of the urushi tree and prized for its depth, durability, and mirror-like finish. Over this radiant backdrop, artisans apply an intricate gradation of raden shell inlay, creating a flowing transition of iridescent tones along the pen’s surface. These shell elements include great green turban shells, nautilus shells, and abalone, each contributing flashes of blue, green, and violet as light moves across the lacquer.

The visual rhythm moves along the length of the pen in a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top gradient of shell inlay, creating a sense of motion and depth against the red lacquer canvas. Accents of mother-of-pearl add further brilliance, while decorative bands crafted using Taka Maki-e techniques frame the composition with subtle dimensional detail.

Despite the dramatic materials, the design remains clean and balanced—allowing the natural iridescence of the shells to take center stage against the rich red urushi surface. The result is a pen that feels both contemporary and rooted in centuries-old decorative traditions.

Part of AP Limited Editions’ Writer Maki-e series, this model offers a slightly more compact format than the brand’s Connoisseur line while maintaining the same dedication to handcrafted artistry. Each pen is produced in an extremely limited edition of just 18 pieces worldwide, making it a rare opportunity for collectors who appreciate traditional Japanese lacquer art in a refined writing instrument.

At the writing end, the pen is fitted with a 14K gold nib, available in a variety of sizes to suit individual writing preferences. The pen uses a cartridge/converter filling system, allowing flexibility with bottled inks while maintaining practical usability beneath the intricate decoration.

Elegant, luminous, and unmistakably handcrafted, Red and Raden is a testament to the enduring beauty of urushi lacquer and shell inlay—an artistic expression that bridges centuries of Japanese craftsmanship with modern fine writing.
