The Cartier Cougar de Cartier Platinum-Plated Fountain Pen is a refined expression of Cartier’s early-1990s writing-instrument design. Its cool metallic finish, slim profile, and jewelry-inspired details give the pen a distinctly formal character, while the 18k gold nib and cartridge/converter filling system make it fully usable as an everyday writer.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Cougar de Cartier is built around a fluted metal body with a platinum-plated finish, polished end pieces, and dark cabochon-style accents at the finials. The detailing is subtle rather than decorative for its own sake, relying on precision and contrast to create the sense of refinement associated with Cartier accessories of the period.

The fluted body also gives the pen more visual movement than a smooth metal finish would provide. Depending on the angle, the platinum plating alternates between bright highlights and softer shadows, allowing the slender silhouette to feel more dimensional without adding unnecessary ornament.

Writing Experience

This example is fitted with an 18k gold Fine nib. The finer point suits precise handwriting, note-taking, and correspondence, while the metal section and body give the pen a more substantial feel than many resin-bodied contemporaries. Cartridge/converter filling keeps the system straightforward and allows the owner to choose between proprietary cartridges and bottled ink.

Collector Context

Vintage Cartier fountain pens occupy an interesting space between luxury accessory and serious writing instrument. Complete examples in unused condition are increasingly difficult to find, particularly with their original presentation intact. This piece is New Old Stock with its original boxes and papers, but is listed as preowned because of its age and prior ownership history.
