The Conklin Word Gauge Fountain Pen - Red Carbon Stealth pairs modern carbon-fiber construction with one of Conklin’s most inventive vintage-inspired filling systems. Matte woven carbon fiber covers the cap and barrel, while glossy black appointments and a vivid red ink window create a technical, performance-oriented finish with a restrained flash of color.
The Word Gauge System
The defining feature is the transparent red Word Gauge window built into the barrel. Numbered graduations estimate the remaining writing capacity from approximately 1,000 to 5,000 words, giving the writer an unusually intuitive way to monitor the piston-filled ink reservoir.
The concept draws from Conklin’s Nozac pens of the 1930s. The Nozac name referred to a “no sac” filling system that replaced a traditional rubber ink sac with an integrated piston. The modern Word Gauge revives that functional idea while using contemporary materials and manufacturing.
Carbon Stealth Construction
The cap and barrel are crafted from matte carbon fiber, a material valued for its strength, low weight, and woven visual texture. Rather than presenting carbon fiber as a decorative overlay alone, the finish allows its directional pattern to remain visible across the body.
Glossy black trim, a matching black grip section, and a black stainless steel nib give the pen its Stealth character. The red Word Gauge window interrupts the otherwise monochromatic design, making the ink level visible while creating a strong focal point at the center of the pen.
Writing Experience
The integrated piston mechanism fills directly from bottled fountain pen ink and provides substantially greater capacity than a standard cartridge. Turning the piston control draws ink through the nib and feed into the internal reservoir, where the colored viewing window makes the remaining supply easy to monitor.
The threaded cap opens in approximately one and one-quarter rotations and may be posted on the barrel. At approximately one ounce, the pen offers a substantial but manageable feel, while the gently shaped grip section supports a secure writing position.
