The Leonardo Essenza Ebonite Starry Night Fountain Pen is a special-edition expression of Leonardo Officina Italiana's stripped-back Essenza design, built around deep blue ebonite with lighter swirling variation that gives the material its "Starry Night" character. The bandless body allows the ebonite itself to remain the visual focus, while the oversized #8 nib and matching blue ebonite feed give the pen a particularly cohesive appearance when uncapped.
Craftsmanship & Design
The Essenza collection is intentionally minimal, reducing the pen to the elements that matter most: the body material, clip, nib, feed, and filling mechanism. In Starry Night, that approach is especially effective because the ebonite carries the entire visual identity of the pen. The absence of a decorative center band leaves the blue material uninterrupted across the barrel and cap, allowing its darker and lighter movement to remain fully visible.
Ebonite has a different tactile character from acrylic or modern resin. It feels warmer in the hand, takes a soft polish, and has a long history in fountain pen construction. Leonardo turns its Essenza pens by hand on a manual lathe, making the material and proportions central to the experience rather than treating ebonite as a secondary decorative element.
Writing Experience
This example is fitted with a large #8 stainless steel Extra Fine nib paired with a blue ebonite feed. The oversized nib gives the front of the pen substantial visual presence, while the ebonite feed provides a traditional feed material that complements the body both functionally and aesthetically.
The integrated piston filling system stores ink directly within the barrel, giving the pen a self-contained filling mechanism and a larger ink reserve than a standard converter. The piston architecture also suits the Essenza philosophy by keeping the exterior clean and free from unnecessary interruption.
