This custom Makar Tools Torpedo Fountain Pen combines the Polish maker's highly machined titanium construction with an unusual crystallized finish and a jewelry-like gem-set roll stop. The result balances Makar's technical, industrial design language with a decorative focal point that is far more elaborate than the maker's standard roll-stop treatments.

Crystallized Titanium

Makar produces crystallized titanium through controlled metallurgical changes in the metal structure. The process creates visible crystalline particles across the surface, giving the titanium a granular shimmer that changes with the light. On this Torpedo, polished spiral accents sweep across the cap and barrel and contrast against the more textured crystallized areas.

Engineering Details

The pen incorporates several of Makar's recognizable functional choices. A long metal section keeps the grip away from the cap threads, while ink-view openings allow the user to monitor the remaining ink level. Makar also places its roll stop on the barrel rather than the cap, so the anti-roll function remains useful when the pen is uncapped.

This example is fitted with a titanium nib and uses a cartridge/converter filling system, combining the maker's emphasis on titanium with practical everyday filling.

Gem-Set Roll Stop

The most unusual detail is the circular barrel-mounted roll stop. Multiple faceted stones are set into a gold-tone mount, creating a distinctly jewelry-like contrast with the otherwise monochromatic titanium body. The stones have not been independently verified as diamonds and are therefore described simply as faceted stones.

That restraint is important because the visual effect does not depend on gemstone identification. The roll stop is clearly more elaborate than a normal machined titanium fitting and gives this custom Torpedo a strong individual identity.
