The Montblanc M ScreenWriter is one of the most unusual expressions of the collaboration between Montblanc and industrial designer Marc Newson. Introduced with the Montblanc M family in 2015, it applies Newson's smooth, reduced design language to an instrument intended to move between analog and digital work. The ScreenWriter uses the same sculptural black-resin body as the rest of the M collection but replaces the conventional writing point with a touchscreen-ready silicon disc that can be exchanged for compatible writing refills.
Craftsmanship & Design
Newson approached the Montblanc M as a complete object rather than a collection of familiar pen components. The black precious-resin body flows into a flattened rear "plateau" carrying the Montblanc emblem, while the cap uses a magnetic closing system that automatically aligns the cap with the emblem and body. The result is visually calm because the pen repeatedly returns to the intended orientation after closing.
The plateau itself required unusually precise finishing. The white Montblanc emblem is integrated into the barrel and the surface is machined to create a continuous flat plane, turning a traditional brand symbol into part of the industrial design rather than an applied ornament. Platinum-coated metal elements provide contrast without breaking Newson's minimal silhouette.
From Paper to Screen
The ScreenWriter was conceived specifically for touchscreens. Its silicon disc allows the user to write, sketch, and navigate on compatible capacitive displays with pen-like control, an idea that was notably forward-looking for a luxury writing-instrument collection launched during the rapid expansion of tablets and large-screen smartphones.
More importantly, the function is not permanent. The ScreenWriter element can be exchanged for compatible Montblanc Artfineliner and capless rollerball refills. That modularity is central to the concept: one body can move between digital input, technical-style fineliner work, and conventional ink-on-paper writing.
Marc Newson and Montblanc M
Newson described the project as an effort to create a pen he would always want to use and to make the experience of fine writing more accessible to a broader audience. The collection included fountain pen, rollerball, ballpoint, ScreenWriter, and Artfineliner versions, all sharing the same essential form. The design received a Red Dot Award for Product Design in 2016, confirming that the M was understood as a significant industrial-design exercise rather than simply a stylistic variation on an existing Montblanc model.
For collectors, the ScreenWriter is particularly interesting because it captures a specific moment in the history of luxury writing instruments: the point at which a traditional pen manufacturer deliberately addressed the touchscreen without abandoning the physical ritual of a crafted writing object.
