The Nakaya Long Cigar Arai-Shu Fountain Pen combines Nakaya's longest clipless silhouette with one of the more distinctive colors in its urushi palette. Arai-Shu is a brilliant light red-orange tone whose name refers to the way dyed fabric becomes lighter after repeated washing, producing a vivid color that feels warmer and more luminous than traditional deep shu.
Arai-Shu Urushi
The Japanese term "arai" means washed, while "shu" refers to the traditional red family used throughout Japanese lacquer work. Arai-Shu therefore describes a lighter, brighter expression of red. On urushi, the color has a strong orange cast and can become increasingly brilliant as the lacquer gains transparency with age.
That aging process is part of the appeal of natural urushi. Rather than remaining visually fixed, the finish can deepen and clarify over time, gradually revealing more of the underlying color and giving the pen a personal patina tied to years of ownership.
The Long Cigar Form
The Long Cigar is Nakaya's longest standard clipless model. Its elongated ebonite body presents a continuous lacquer surface without a clip, keeping the silhouette visually pure and allowing the Arai-Shu finish to dominate the design.
Nakaya's current Cigar Long dimensions are approximately 170 mm in length, about 15 mm in diameter, and roughly 25 g in weight. The proportions create a pen with substantial presence while retaining the lightness and warmth of ebonite beneath the lacquer.
Writing Experience
This example is fitted with a 14K gold Broad nib. Nakaya is known for treating nib setup as part of the individual pen rather than a generic final component, and its gold nibs are valued for their controlled feedback and precise line character.
