The Nakaya Long Cigar Fountain Pen - Nuno Kise Silver Tin Fabric brings one of Nakaya's most tactile decorative treatments to the brand's elongated clipless Cigar form. Rather than relying on painted imagery, the surface is built from fabric, urushi lacquer, and silver-tin material, creating a finish whose character comes from texture, depth, and the irregularity of hand application.
Craftsmanship & Design
Nuno Kise is a fabric-based lacquer technique in which cloth is applied over the ebonite body and integrated into the surface with repeated layers of urushi. On the Silver Tin version, the fabric structure is then worked with a silver-tin and lacquer treatment that is polished between applications. The result is neither smooth like polished tamenuri nor overtly pictorial like maki-e. Instead, subtle ridges and softer areas remain visible and tactile, allowing the construction process itself to become the decoration.
The Long Cigar form is particularly well suited to this finish. Its 170 mm clipless silhouette gives the material a broad, uninterrupted surface and avoids breaking the pattern with a clip or decorative center band. The shape remains minimalist, but the surface is anything but simple.
Writing Experience
This example is fitted with a 14k Soft Fine nib with ruthenium plating. Nakaya's Soft Fine offers a finer Japanese line while allowing more movement than a standard rigid Fine, and the dark ruthenium finish complements the cool silver-grey character of the Nuno Kise surface.
The pen uses a cartridge/converter filling system compatible with Platinum cartridges and converters. This keeps the filling mechanism straightforward and serviceable while allowing the body construction and decorative finish to remain the primary focus.
The Art of Nuno Kise
What makes Nuno Kise especially interesting is that the fabric is not simply wrapped around the pen as an outer covering. It becomes part of the lacquer structure itself. Repeated application, curing, and polishing allow the weave and irregular surface to emerge through the finish, producing a material quality that is difficult to reproduce with resin, metal, or conventional lacquer alone.
The Silver Tin treatment adds another layer of visual complexity. Light moves differently across the ridged and smoother areas, shifting the surface between silver, pewter, charcoal, and muted grey depending on angle. The gripping section is likewise finished in a textured silver-toned lacquer treatment, carrying the material language through the writing end of the pen rather than restricting it to the cap and barrel.
