A Presidential Commemorative
Bill Clinton's second inauguration marked the final presidential inauguration of the twentieth century. Parker's Insignia was an especially fitting platform for the commemorative pen: slim, formal, and closely associated with professional and ceremonial use. Clinton had also selected a black lacquer Parker Insignia ballpoint when signing the Family and Medical Leave Act in 1993, giving the model an established connection to his presidency beyond the souvenir market.
The gold inscription transforms the pen from a standard black lacquer Insignia into a document of its moment. Rather than relying on elaborate ornament, the design preserves the disciplined form of the original pen and lets the presidential signature and inauguration wording carry the historical significance.
Design and Writing Experience
Introduced in 1991 and designed by Geoff Hollington, the Insignia was conceived as a slim premium writing instrument with tightly controlled proportions. The elongated Parker arrow clip reinforces the vertical line of the barrel, while the polished black surface provides a formal background for the gold-plated trim.
The twist-action mechanism extends the ballpoint tip without disrupting the clean crown. It accepts Parker-style ballpoint refills, allowing the pen to remain practical for regular writing while preserving its commemorative character.
