The Pelikan M640 Polar Lights Special Edition belongs to the Beauties of Nature series, a short-lived group of heavier, sculptural Pelikan fountain pens produced between 2007 and 2011. Released in 2008, Polar Lights interprets the shifting greens and dark tones of the aurora through a lacquered metal barrel, deep resin components, and cool rhodium-plated trim.

Craftsmanship & Design

Unlike a conventional Souverän M600, the M640 uses a weighted metal barrel with a gently swelling profile and a broad, straight clip rather than Pelikan’s familiar pelican-beak clip. The Polar Lights finish is predominantly green-black, with layered tones intended to recall the changing light of the aurora. Its polished surface keeps the decorative treatment visually rich without introducing a tactile texture.

Collector Significance

The M640 series occupies an unusual place in modern Pelikan production: it retains the piston-filling architecture and gold-nib writing experience associated with the Souverän family while using a substantially heavier, more decorative body. Polar Lights was one of the 2008 releases in the series and has become increasingly difficult to find in well-preserved, complete condition.

Writing Experience

This example is fitted with an 18k gold Extra Fine nib and Pelikan’s integrated piston filling system. The EF nib provides a precise line while the M640’s additional weight gives the pen a more substantial feel in hand than a standard M600.
