The Pilot Namiki Sokuikinen HouOu Fountain Pen—also known as the Double Phoenix—is a masterwork of Japanese lacquer artistry, created by famed Kokkokai artist Kyusai Yoshida. A tribute to rebirth, longevity, and divine protection, the phoenix is one of the most revered symbols in Japanese culture. This exceptional piece unites Namiki’s legendary craftsmanship with Yoshida’s expressive maki-e technique, resulting in a pen that feels alive with movement, color, and mythic presence.
Crafted from hand-polished ebonite coated in multiple layers of urushi lacquer, the pen features two radiant phoenixes soaring across the cap and barrel. Using traditional taka-maki-e, hirame-ji, and togidashi maki-e techniques, Yoshida layers gold powder, raden (abalone shell), and richly colored pigments to create shimmering depth and dimensionality. Every feather glows with iridescent life, and each curve is meticulously shaped to follow the movement of the hand-drawn birds.
