Wancher Dream Pen True Urushi Yellow brings a vivid lacquer finish to the quiet, balanced form of the Dream Pen. Beneath the color is an ebonite foundation, while the surface is built through the patient application of traditional Japanese urushi lacquer. Yellow gives the form a brighter and more contemporary expression, but the making process remains grounded in a craft tradition defined by time, controlled curing, and hand finishing.

The Art of Urushi

Urushi is applied by hand in repeated layers, with each stage requiring careful curing before the next can begin. The finished surface is not simply painted color: it has visual depth that develops from the relationship between the lacquer, the underlying ebonite, and the final polish. Wancher's True Urushi pens are painted by craftspeople in Wajima, a Japanese region closely associated with lacquer craftsmanship, and the process can take at least three months from start to finish.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Dream Pen's simple cigar-shaped silhouette is especially well suited to urushi because it allows the surface treatment to remain the central focus. Yellow lacquer brings a clean, luminous tone to the form, while the absence of unnecessary ornament keeps the pen connected to the Japanese preference for material depth and disciplined restraint.
