The Waterman Patrician Lapis Blue Fountain Pen is one of the most striking modern revivals of Waterman’s historic Patrician name. Introduced in the early 1990s as part of the Man 100 family, the Patrician revived design cues from Waterman’s celebrated 1930s pens while interpreting them through richly layered lacquer and substantial modern construction.

Craftsmanship & Design

The Lapis Blue finish is built from multiple layers of lacquer over a substantial underlying body, producing a deep blue surface with lighter mineral-like variation intended to recall the vivid celluloid colors of the original Patrician era. Gold-plated trim, including the cap bands and Waterman Ideal globe detail, gives the pen a formal period-inspired contrast.

The overall silhouette is based on the Man 100, but the Patrician treatment adds more elaborate color and decorative detail. Its combination of weight, lacquer depth, and traditional Waterman styling gives it a presence that is difficult to replicate in more recent production pens.

Writing Experience

This example is fitted with an 18k gold Fine nib and uses a cartridge/converter filling system. The Fine point provides a controlled everyday line, while the filling system allows convenient cartridge use or bottled ink through a converter.

Collector Significance

The modern Lapis Blue Patrician has become increasingly sought after among Waterman collectors, particularly in New Old Stock condition. Its vivid blue lacquer, classic gold trim, and connection to both the Man 100 and historic Patrician families give it a distinctive place in Waterman’s modern catalog.
